Selecting building materials and construction methods are especially important in Florida. Our environment, combined with the possibility of extreme weather conditions from hurricanes, lightning, and tornadoes, requires that homeowners be knowledgeable and exercise judgment about how their house is built. DiVosta uses a unique system to build new homes.
"Our formula to build a solid, quality house involves three main areas," said Glen Trotta, president of DiVosta Homes, Inc. "We use reinforced steel and poured concrete construction, our construction method is an efficient production line process with rigorous quality control, and our people are trained full-time DiVosta specialists."
Like most builders, construction starts with a poured concrete foundation [Fig. 2]. But the next steps are unique in the home building industry.
DiVosta uses steel reinforced concrete to make walls or columns and tie beams [Fig. 3]. Second story floors and walls are always made of concrete.
"This kind of building requires specialists."
According to Trotta, the DiVosta building system results in walls that have a maximum precision and strength. Roof truss straps, the thick metal strips that hold onto the roof trusses, are connected to the steel in the poured concrete walls or tie beams [Fig. 4].
Homes are built in what can best be described as an onsite factory without walls. Each member of the crew knows his or her job, and knows it well. Every building operation is planned and executed before the next one starts. Quality is checked every step of the way. In a DiVosta home you will never move into a residence where dozens of trades people have walked all over your new carpet simply because the carpet installer "was in the area early."
"This kind of building requires specialists," said Trotta. "Each crew works from one house to the next using a manufacturing engineering model instead of a subcontracting model most other builders use. It's why we can build quality homes so efficiently."
"We like to say our houses are 'build-solid'. When homebuyers see this process, at first they're surprised, then when they see the results, they become believers in the system."
All DiVosta homes are built using this assembly-line method by a crew of 247 full-time construction pros, each with his or her own specialty. From the time a home is started until it's ready for occupancy, it takes an average of 47 days! Based on an 8-hour day, that's about 376 hours.
"We like to say our houses are 'built-solid'," said Trotta. "When homebuyers see this process, at first they're surprised, then when they see the results, they become believers in the system."
DiVosta has built more than 25,000 homes in Florida and has been using this method for most of its 43 year history.
